Elista was founded in 1865 as a small settlement; the name is from Kalmyk els(e)n ‘sand(y).
Since 1991, the town has been characterized by the slow decay of Soviet-built institutions, and the large construction projects instigated by the republic’s millionaire president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
The town center has a number of renovated public parks focused on the main square, boasting statues to both Vladimir Lenin and the Buddha. To the east of the town lies the Olympic village of the 1998 XXXIII Chess Olympiad, known locally as “City-Chess“. The site has a public swimming pool and an excellent museum of Kalmyk Buddhist art, and is also infrequently used as a conference center. Topic of my discussion is about me, because I have unusual life story.
My name is Olga. My family is good and successful; my parents brought me up as a kind, helpful and clever girl. At school I always studied hard and my mother took me to different societies: to art school, to the center for talented children for learning English and computer classes, bell dances. To tell the truth, I felt myself as a “blue stocking”, I had no private life and friends, but after finishing school my life abruptly changed. East – a delicate matter. This is common knowledge. But one thing – to talk about it, and quite another – encounter this subtlety in life.
Kalmykia amazed me. After arriving flying in Elista, I came to the country untouched democracy. Such a quietand kind, peaceful Khanate. Little virgin island in the vast sea of unbridled, it is not regulated Russian democracy. Photo exhibition “The hidden Republic – Pictures from Kalmykia” was opened in Denmark. Kasper Boye told about Kalmykia.
Kalmykia is Europe’s only Buddhist nation. It is located on the North Caucasus – with almost equidistant to the Black Sea in the west, the Caspian Sea in the east, Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) in the north and the conflict-ravaged Chechnya in the south.
Kalmykia is a republic in the Russian Federation. They have their own parliament, but the political leader appointed from Moscow.
Ethnic kalmyks up more than half of the population (the rest are Russians, kasakher, etc..). They are descendants of the Mongol tribe Oirat that early in the 1600s crossed the Urals to ravage and rule on the Caucasian plains. Tribe made a pact with Peter the Great, who offered them freedom – and guns – on the use of their Mongol steel and horses in the defense of southern borders of Russian Empire. An interview with globe-trotting chess promoter, former president, and freelance diplomat Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
INTERVIEW BY JOSHUA E. KEATING. MAY 9, 2012
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov garners an awful lot of press for the president of the World Chess Federation. But he’s not exactly your average chess buff. From 1993 to 2010, he was president of the Russian republic of Kalmykia and became known for his efforts to transform the remote Buddhist region into an international chess mecca as well as for his frank comments about an encounter with aliens he claims to have had in 1997. (He was also widely criticized for his autocratic rule over the impoverished republic.)
